SMITHVILLE
Smithville is located 12 miles southeast of Bastrop and 42 miles southeast of Austin. Smithville was established in 1827, when Thomas Gazley, who had received a Mexican land grant, settled on the 4,428 acres and operated a store. He and his neighbors returned there after the Texas War for Independence was won. A community sprang up around the store, and the town was named after another earlier settler, William Smith. In 1871, a Presbyterian Church was organized. A post office was opened in 1876. The town was incorporated in March 1895. In 1900, Smithville had a population of 2,577 and was the largest town in the county.
